Additional Services
|

|
|
|
Special
Education - State and federal laws guarantee
the right of students with special needs to a free
and appropriate education in the least restrictive
environment. As the enrolling district, CSD is
responsible for coordinating special education and
related services to CSD students who qualify for
such services. Prior to enrollment, CSD and the
resident school district will enter into an
individualized cooperative agreement, as identified
in 4 AAC 33.432(c) (1-5) and IDEA regulations, with
regards to special education service
delivery.
|
|
|
Home
visits - Parents may request a home visit by
the advisory teacher. The purpose of the home visit
would depend upon the individual need(s) of the
parent and/or students, including, for example,
modeling a lesson/strategy, conducting an
assessment, or helping to create a thematic
unit.
|
|
|
Credit
transfer - Although CSD has a waiver for
Carnegie Units from the Alaska Department of
Education and Early Development, CSD is able to
transfer a student's level placement into formal
credits and grades. A credit transfer may be
requested by the parent if, for instance, a student
transfers into a traditional school setting.
(Please contact your advisory teacher for more
information.)
|
|
|
Supplemental
student opportunities - As public school
students, Extension students have the opportunity
to participate in a variety of educational
opportunities such as any ASAA-sponsored
activities, Battle of the Books, Close-Up (high
school students), Spelling Bee's, to name a few.
Students are encouraged to discuss these events
with their advisory teacher so participation
requirements can be met in a timely
manner.
|
|
|
Dual
credit - Students are eligible to take college
courses for which they may receive credit for their
ILP with CSD and college concurrently. (Special
reimbursement guidelines apply. Please refer to the
section on "Curriculum and Purchasing.")
|
|
|
Parent
Training - CSD values and encourages the role
of parents as the primary educators of their
children. From time to time, special workshops and
classes are offered by CSD to assist you in
delivering quality education.
|
|
|
Transition
Scholarship - In an effort to reward students for their academic achievement and assist them with their post-secondary pursuits in one of the five CSD Outcomes, all CSD students who have been enrolled at least one complete school year, have a good attendance record, and are considered to be in good standing with the District are eligible for a transition scholarship in the amount of up to $1,000 a year for three years. Contact your advisory teacher for an application.

Phase NB New Beginnings (approx. 3 days)
This is an optional, introductory phase. Chugach partners with teachers, parents, and community members to bring our younger students to Anchorage. They are provided with many hands-on, real life opportunities to explore and discover personal growth, teamwork, problem solving, and decision-making. During this phase students gain a tremendous amount of knowledge in personal social skills, career development, and service learning to take back to their communities, schools, and homes.
Phase 1. "Search Week" (approximately 5 days)
For many program participants, this is the first phase of the Anchorage House continuum.
Many of the activities focus on personal growth, teamwork, problem solving, and decision-making. Also, The students have exposure to a variety of career choices and secondary education options through interactive field trips in the 6 pathways: Arts & Communication, Business/ Management & Technology, Health Services, Human Services, Natural resources & Industrial & Engineering Technology.
Phase 2. "Earn to Return" (approximately 9 days)
This is offered to successful graduates of Phase 1. Activities review those of Phase 1 as well as focus on job search strategies and understanding life after high school. Students are engaged in Job Shadowing (a two-four hour, usually one-on-one, career exposure at a work site) in the 6 Pathways. Participants' level of responsibility for their own learning is increased as each student applies, interviews, trains, and carries out duties of various positions in our simulated in-house "Corporation". It is tailored to the individual needs and interests of each participant. By the end of Phase 3, students should be responsible, self-directed, and have a good understanding of the opportunities available to them when they graduate from high school.
