Youth Area Watch - Community Restoration
Project
|

|

|
Each of the communities involved in the
Youth Area Watch Program completed a local
restoration project. The actual project
itself was thought of and implemented by
the students involved, with the help of
other community members. These projects
covered a large range of different topics
and areas of science. They were a great
learning source for all of the people
involved, teachers and students alike, as
well as being a fun way of promoting good
science and an interest in the community.
The students from each school chose what
project they would do based upon several
criteria. First, they identified any needs
that their communities might have that
they could fulfill. This involved much
brainstorming on the part of the students
and teachers, as well as input from other
members of the community.
|
|
They tried to involve both members from
the community as well as other students at
school so that more people would benefit
from this experience than just those in
Youth Area Watch. Next, they planned how
they would address this need using as much
science as possible. They evaluated how
feasible the project would be, and what it
would take to accomplish it.
After that was completed, they prepared
a formal letter of request for all the
equipment and/or money that was needed to
accomplish their project and sent it to
the project coordinators. This letter
outlined their plans as well as anything
that they would require to complete their
project.

After all the preliminary steps were
completed, the students undertook their
projects. This involved a lot of hard work
on the part of the students and their
coordinators, but was well worth the
effort. After their completion all the
sites wrote final reports, which give the
details about the individual projects they
did. If you would like to read them, just
