Youth Area Watch - Community Restoration
Project - Valdez 2000
Community Sign and Pamphlets
Valdez chose this project to make a lasting
impact on the community, and to make the public
aware of YAW. The goal was to beautify the city of
Valdez by contributing to the communities biggest
income, tourists.
Students began planning for the project by:
contacting individuals who could help, looking up
the costs of the items needed, setting up dates to
work on and complete four signs, finding places to
work on them after they were removed from storage,
and submitting a plan to the coordinators in
Anchorage for approval. The project was going to
require at least three people to volunteer with the
sign, from the community as well as students from
the school. When the project was completed, it was
going to be announced in the paper.

The original plan involved four signs,
which the students were going to remodel
and design, but we ran short of time with
lack of cooperation from the group, along
with the VCVB. Since the signs weren't
acquired soon enough in the year, students
couldn't begin the completion of the
project. So one sign was decided upon,
along with pamphlets to put inside the
Valdez Visitor Information Center. The
original deadline was May 1st, but due to
lack of time the deadline was changed to
May 10th.

The community need is still
accomplished with the one sign, and the
pamphlets are informational for the
tourists who visit Valdez. On one side of
the sign is a scene of the different types
of wildlife in the Valdez area, saying
"Welcome to Valdez"; on the other side is
a picture of an oil tanker being taken out
by a tug boat saying "Prevention is the
Key". The pamphlets answer ten of the most
common questions asked by tourists when
visiting Valdez, and it also explains a
little about Youth Area Watch and the
restoration project. When the sign is set
up, there will be an announcement in the
paper, and hopefully followed by a BBQ
fundraiser for the Visitor's Center.

Even though our project did not turn
out exactly how we planned in the
beginning, the final products are still
great. We are proud of the hard work we
put into this to put something back into
our community through Youth Area
Watch.
