Youth Area Watch - Water Quality
|

|

|
Students involved in Youth Area Watch
collect oceanographic data every two
weeks. This is a description of how one
group of students collect and test their
water samples.
Youth Area Watch is made up of several
different groups around the Prince William
Sound Area. Our group is made up of
several students from Elementary School to
Senior High School.

Throughout the year we have been
collecting water samples at the Institute
of Marine Science dock. We collect these
samples at 0, 5, and 10 meters. We use a
device that has two whiffle like balls on
each end of the tube. This device is
attached to a rope. (Device meaning water
sampler.)
We gently lower the water sampler into
the water. As it is lowered to the exact
layer we want it, we pull the string hard
and then bring the device up to the dock
and pour the water collected into a
container.

We take the temperature and then write
it down on one of our charts. We go back
to the Elementary School and use the
LaMotte Salinity Titration Test Kit to
measure the salinity of each layer of
water. After we are done we write our
answers down on a chart and cleanup.
Students also collect meteorological
data daily including: precipitation
amounts, current conditions, wind velocity
and direction, temperature, and barometric
pressure

student collected data.
